JESSALYNN MEDAIRY WESTGATE
When did you start your pole journey?
1/1/2005
Why did you decide to try pole dancing?
I heard about it on the news and a pole studio was open about 15 minutes from my college. I was interested in all forms of dance so exploring a taboo form of dance wasn't going to be something I let slip through my fingers.
What do you love most about pole dancing?
I really enjoy weight lifting, dance and music. It compiles all of those aspects together. I also love how there's no one in the pole fitness community who has been instructing Pole more than 20 years so there's no one to drill how things should or shouldn't be done. Pole is still in its infancy and isn't bound by right or wrong technique. There's too much exploring happening to create manuals on idealism or envision a movement can only be achieved by one entry. There is safe and unsafe practices but that's a practice done in every aspect of our lives, not limited to pole dancing.
Why do you love Pole Pressure?
I love the way we all know each other. We're interested in each other. It's inclusive, conversational and diverse. As much as I could say I love the building, location, the workout, the neon sign and the dance floor... I love Pole Pressure because I get to meet so many amazing people. In my mind, if someone told me to think of 'Pole Pressure', I don't think of the classes at all. I think of Aileen, Zach, Christina, Stephanie, Devon, Kayla, Keabra and everyone's faces. I think of everyone laughing, putting materials in cubbies, and talking about their day and spraying their towels. I love Pole Pressure because of the human connection.
What are some of your goals for this year?
I've been building a house all year in Texas and am looking forward to setting up my own Pole Studio in my home. It has its own private entry, walk-in closet, full bath, and beautiful natural lighting. Devon has given me permission to use the name Pole Pressure Texas and I'm looking forward to taking her up on that.
I'm also looking forward to a bit of ""me"" time on Pole. Having my own space to create my own movement, in the comfort of my home, is something I've been excited to do for a while. "
